International travel is picking back up if you are a vaccinated or can produce a negative COVID-19 test, depending on where you are traveling from and to.
But as with many other facets of life, there are new policies and procedures to deal with that will differ from country to country.
If you’re planning a return to international travel for the first time since the pandemic began, Topeka Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five things you need to know before heading abroad.
- Do Your Homework
Before you go (or even book the trip), research travel protocols for the country you are planning to visit. You’ll want to do this for each country, if you’re planning more of an extensive international itinerary. Once you solidify your plans, leave copies of your travel itinerary with family or close friends.
- Keep Your Smartphone Handy
Along with keeping your vaccine card handy, you will be able to access important documents and get instant travel updates on your smartphone. Most airlines will allow you to put in your telephone number to receive alerts about delays or cancellations.
- Consider Travel Insurance
Travel insurance can not only protect your trip before you go, but it can also help out while you’re on your trip. You can file a claim or find medical assistance while you’re at your destination.
- Download an International Calling Service
Your cell phone plan isn’t likely to work overseas, but as long as you’re connected to Wi-Fi, you can use apps like Skype and WhatsApp to keep in touch and reach those at home if need be.
- Give Yourself Plenty of Time
It’s recommended that you arrive to the airport two hours before an international departure, but you may want to make it three hours now. Checking vaccine cards and performing rapid tests all takes extra time, and you don’t want to get bogged down in that process and miss your flight.
